Falling Down

It’s not too often that you see people just walking around suddenly fall down. I’m not talking about stumbling a bit, but actually butt to the ground falling. This morning I saw a woman hit the ground after getting bumped by a door. After thinking about it, everyone I’ve seen fall in public in the last few years have been women.

Now according to movies and TV, women are supposed to have greater balance than men. Indeed, due to their hips and things their center of balance is generally lower, which makes it easier for them to remain standing. There are any number of sports where this type of thing should be an advantage; gymnastics, snowboarding, skateboarding, tight rope walking … umm log rolling?

My question then is, are heels entirely to blame for women spontaneously falling over? Are women sacrificing one of their natural advantages to boost their other natural advantage (being hot)? Has anyone here suddely fallen down in sneakers? In heels?

  • Women are also naturally a lot dumber than men. When I was still with my ex-girlfriend in Philadelphia, on weekends I had to come down from New York to see her. She’d meet me at the bus terminal and then we’d walk back to her place together. One time on the walk back out of nowhere she falls in the most dramatic fashion that I had ever seen. It was like watching someone lose balance on roller skates, they coast for a bit desperately trying to regain balance before actually falling. She did this with Vans on, the anti-heels, so I think it’s really more about how dumb their brains are.
